My Geek Score: If you are like most Mac users, your life revolves around your computer. You likely use it to communicate with family and friends, keep up with work, and complete important everyday tasks. It’s no wonder that system failure can be a massive inconvenience in your life.
Apple releases a new version of its Mac operating system once a year,
and if you want to keep your Mac running in tip-top shape, it's important that
you install these free updates as soon as they become available. Updates to
macOS (previously known as Mac OS X) are released through the App Store. There
are two ways to access the App Store on your Mac: via the Apple menu at the top
left of your screen or by clicking the "Updates" icon in the Dock.
If you don't see any updates, it probably means that your computer is
already set up to automatically download updates in the background and will
install them overnight when you aren't using your computer. If you want to
check for updates manually, click the "Updates" tab at the top of the
App Store window and click "Update" next to any available updates. If
a major update is available, such as macOS Mojave (version 10.14), you can also
click "Get" to download it.
Most updates will require a restart of your computer before they take
effect, although some will require more than one restart.
How to Upgrade macOS?
Before you upgrade, we recommend that you
back up your Mac. Then, if your Mac is running OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 or
later, you can upgrade directly to macOS Mojave. Click the download button and
follow the onscreen instructions to begin your upgrade. If you don't have
broadband access, you can upgrade your Mac at any Apple Store.
Upgrading from an older version of macOS?
If you're running High Sierra (10.13), Sierra (10.12), or El Capitan
(10.11), Then update mac to latest macOS Mojave from the App
Store. If you're running Lion (10.7) or Mountain Lion (10.8), you will need to
upgrade to El Capitan (10.11) first. If you don't have broadband access, you
can upgrade your Mac at any Apple Store.
The best way to keep your Mac secure and up-to-date is to install the
latest macOS. Each new macOS release includes updates that enhance security,
improve stability and fix other bugs. It’s very important to install the latest
macOS update to keep your Mac safe.
